The IBM VGA graphics hardware represented a major advance in desktop PC graphics. Its most impressive standard video mode allowed for 320x200 pixels where each pixel was colored from an entry in a 256-color palette. Each of these palette entries was an 18-bit RGB color, 6 bits for each component. These capabilities (later considered limitations) set the standard for many FMV formats used in PC games developed in the early era of CD-ROM computer gaming.
