You should be able to get around the file too long message by having the upgraded youtube account (called something like director).  It allows you to post movies that last more than 10 minutes.  According to the website, the maximum size is 100 MB.
Mentioned in the Troubleshooting:Uploads section is that Real media (.rm) and Flash (.flv) are not supported.  They mention using Windows Movie Maker or iMovie, so all the formats that either one can produce should work.
