NSF stands for NES Sound Format. The format encapsulates sequences of instructions extracted from 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games. The instructions activate NES sound hardware in order to play music.

Some NSF files have the extension .nsfe to indicate extended metadata.
