The Sony PlayStation is a video game console developed by Sony and released in 1995. The system is CD-based. In terms of multimedia, the system actually had hardware support for FMV playback via a hardware unit named the motion decoder. This is in contrast to Sega consoles at the time whose FMV was all performed via software. Audio in PS games was often encoded as XA ADPCM.
