Each accepted project is developed in its own sandbox, separate from the main FFmpeg codebase. ESA Summer of Code in Space (SOCIS) is a program run by the Advanced Concepts Team of the European Space Agency that offers student developers stipends to write code for various space-related open source software projects.

FFmpeg run a joint application with Libav for the pilot program of 2011.
