DVD is an optical disc used to store digital data. DVD was originally an acronym but an official definition was never settled upon (unlike its precursor, CD = Compact Disc). However, "Digital Video Disc" and "Digital Versatile Disc" have both endured as meanings.
Standard DVDs use these technologies:
- MPEG: transport, video, and audio codecs
- VOBsub: subtitle format
- Meridian Lossless Packing: used on DVD-audio discs
- DVD Content Scrambling System: used for region and navigation restriction on DVD video discs
- DVD Content Protection for Pre-recorded Media: used for encrypting DVD audio discs
