MACE apparently stands for Macintosh Audio Compression/Expansion. It is a basic algorithm for encoding 3 8-bit PCM samples into 1 byte (MACE 3:1, 'mac3') or 6 8-bit PCM samples into 1 byte (MACE 6:1, 'mac6').
