3wplayer, also known as DomPlayer, is a harmful application that installs viruses and trojans.

3wPlayer is a rogue media player software application bundled with trojans that can infect computers running Microsoft Windows. It is designed to exploit users who download video files, instructing them to download and install the program in order to view the video. The 3wPlayer employs a form of social engineering to infect computers. Seemingly desirable video files, such as recent movies, are released via BitTorrent or other distribution channels. These files resemble conventional AVI files, but are engineered to display a message when played on most media player programs, instructing the user to visit the 3wPlayer website and download the software to view the video. The program is bundled with malware that has various undesirable effects.

The 3wPlayer is infected with Trojan.Win32.Obfuscated.en, which is typically installed without user interaction through security exploits, and can severely compromise a user's system security. Such risks may open illicit network connections, use polymorphic tactics to self-mutate, disable security software, modify system files, and install additional malware. These risks may also collect and transmit personally identifiable information (PII) without a users' consent and severely degrade the performance and stability of the computer.

there is a perl script to decode the 3wplayer file back into avi

Vodei is proprietery multimedia container based on the AVI format. A product known as Vodei Multimedia Processor, which is avilable for Microsoft Windows from http://www.vodei.com, is the only known way of displaying or converting Vodei files. These files consist of three parts: a standard compliant AVI video which is displayed when Vodei MP is not installed, a specially encoded/encrypted/formated video which plays when the appropriate software is installed, and a small amount of control data.

Playback and Conversion using Vodei Multimedia Processor
When installed on any compatible system (Windows 98+), Vodei Multimedia Processor acts as a DirectShow filter splitter for Vodei files. The software reads the files, extracts the audio/video and passes is on to the codecs installed on the system for decoding. Once decoded, the data can be displayed in any DirectShow media player such as Windows Media Player. It is also possible to transcode the content in Vodei files using any application capable of using DirectShow as an input. As always, transcoding to lossy format will result in a loss in quality. Vodei MP uses the DirectShow merit system to pass any non Vodei files to the next highest priority compatible splitter on the system - as such, the software should have no impact on non Vodei files.

When Vodei MP is not installed, only the standard AVI compliant portion of the file can be opened. Both audio/video portions can be encoded using any codec and be of any length but many files found in the wild contain a short video encoded with Microsoft RLE, directing the viewer to download the software, and a longer video encoded with a MPEG-4 codec.

File Format and Purpose
According the official website, "Vodei makes possible the storage of higher quality content in smaller files and the faster transmission of multimedia files over file distribution networks." The website does not explain how this is done.

If one is to assume that the only part that the viewer is interested in is PartB (the specifically encoded part) then a typical Vodei file contains about 2MB of "useless" data and using this format actually increases the file size. It is, however, PartA that informs the viewer what the required software is (both Vodei MP and the audio/video codecs) as opposed to letting the viewer figure it out on their own. A computer newbie left on their own to figure out codec related things is a waste of their time and a danger to their computer; as such, the extra 2MB is well worth a few seconds of extra downloading time. The file size reduction (if exists) may be due to the way PartB is stored but this can't be determined conclusively since the size of the original data is unknown and the Vodei encoder is not public available. It is safe to say that there are both less efficient and more efficient methods - with their own upsides and downsides - of storing Vodei equivalent multimedia quality.

A faulty assumption is that the only way to increase data transmission speeds is reducing the size of the data; this can be illustrated using a real world analogy. When driving from point A to point B, taking a 4 lane highspeed highway may involve traveling a greater distance but would still take less time than taking small streets with multiple stop signs and traffic lights. Similarly, it is possible, using the right system, to increase transmission speeds and reduce download time while also increasing the file size. Vodei could, in theory, improve download times by utilizing an encoding algorithm specially suited for one (or a set of) file distribution network or running a CDN.

It has been proposed that Vodei is designed for copyright protection but this is unlikely since the software places no restrictions on playback or conversion. The FAQ appears to indicate that the software is financed through license fees charged to publishers but it has also been suggested, on Internet forums, that Vodei MP is sold using the shareware model.

Marketing Method
The advertising strategy for the software is three-pronged.
The majority of users that learn of Vodei Multimedia Processor do so by downloading a file encoded with the container. As stated before, viewing the file without the software merely displays an ad to the software maker where it is advertised as a free download.
The user can then download the software and install it. After an extended amount of use, the software might open a dialog box (pictured right) asking the viewer to register the software. Upon typing in the users machine number in the registration page, the site transfers the user to another page asking for payment information (pictured lower right).

Safety
Unfortunately with the prevalence of spyware, viruses, and malware on the Internet these days, it has become natural for people to become suspicious of Internet downloads. This section applies only to Vodei MP version 2.00 downloaded from the official website . Caution should be used when installing older, newer, cracked, hacked, or pirated versions as they may behave differently.

The first concern, despite denials by the creators, is that Vodei MP is allegedly spyware that uses the Internet to communicate and report information about the user's computer and behavior (such as what media files are viewed) to the author, government, content owner, or some other third party. Vodei MP has been tested and worked as described on Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista with no Internet connection. Once the systems were connected to the Internet and traffic analyzed using a packet sniffer, Vodei MP did not attempt to connect to the Internet over a period of 72 hours. Vodei MP does load some Windows libraries related to networking but these have many other uses, such as internal local communication, besides connecting to the Internet. Since the software never connects to the Internet, it is not possible for it to be spyware because it never sends any information to anyone.

Vodei MP does not modify any multimedia files and it does not modify any system data or registry entries which are not necessary for proper playback of Vodei files. The included uninstaller undoes all changes made to the Windows Registry during installation and removes all files created during installation, with one exception. Due to limitations in Microsoft Windows preventing the deletion of files which are in use, in some cases some DLL files will remain in the installation directory; these files are completely harmless and can be easily deleted after restarting the computer.

The conclusion is that any unexpected behavior (none of which appeared during this test) exhibited by Vodei MP is due to an unintentional conflict with other software or a bug; this should of course be reported to the distributor.

Qabala, is the marketing method relevant to this article? There is no marketing section for AVI or Matroska or FLV or any other container format.
The MultimediaWiki is for "cataloging technical details," not marketing methods. In fact, there is only one other article in the whole wiki which even mentions marketing.
I don't think the marketing method for the Vodei software is significant enough (heck, it's just typical shareware) to include it in an article which is supposed to be about the technical details of the format. Do you think otherwise or just a little upset about not being able to watch those redheads? ;) MovieMan 03:17, 20 March 2007 (EDT)
: Yes, the marketing strategy is relevent to the article because the marketing, itself, is technical. There is no portion of the marketing (other than the official site) that isn't a part of the software or the container. Users learn of the software due to an embedded ad in the container. They learn they must pay for the software due to an embedded nag screen. As you've stated what you observed in your tests, I have tested the software on multiple systems as well and gotten different results than you. Are your results more valid than mine? I have re-entered the information about the internet connection that I posted before, but this time I entered it as if to be a preample to your refutation. Is this a decent compromise? I get my findings in, but yours is still the prevailing information. And I had no problem watching the redheads after running the file through virtualdub ;). Qabala 11:25, 20 March 2007 (EDT)
:: The ad is content inside the container. It is not part of the container format which is what this article is about. Do you see the difference? Also, I looked again at the link to the forum you added and "DeeK" reports being able to use it for at least 30 minutes so the 10 minute statement makes no sense either (I have been able to run it for hours with no windows). I also saw plenty of posts stating that it does not connect to the Internet. I can be easily convinced otherwise if you provide packet sniffer logs indicating Vodei MP connects to the Internet, would you please do that? MovieMan 21:05, 20 March 2007 (EDT)

I have now completed the purpose and safety sections. I welcome any comments.
I have replaced the speculations with the safety information, since that is what it was mostly about. I moved some ideas to other sections and got rid of what I was able to analytically confirm to be garbage.
There were some allegations regarding the business model but those do not belong here, IMO; for example, Microsoft does not have any business related info and they have faced major lawsuits. I checked many other company articles, at random, and none of them have any money information or links to any forums discussing them.
I'm happy with how this article turned out, I think it is the best available source for information about this container format. MovieMan 03:09, 15 March 2007 (EDT)
::I tested the software on 4 machines with the file in your screenshots and did not get any of the registration notices. My guess is that maybe they only show up after having it installed, or using it, for a long time. That's why I added the sentence "it has also been suggested, on Internet forums, that Vodei MP is sold using the shareware model" which explains it quite well, IMO. There are no claims of the software being free on the Vodei website, all it says is "free download", and it is; I haven't found anyone claiming that they were charged for downloading it. I'm not defending them but these are the same marketing methods used by thousands of other shareware authors and millions of merchants that offer something for "free" with conditions. If the software somehow billed the user without their authorization or forced them to pay or was impossible to uninstall then we should definitely warn people - but it does none of that. It would be awesome if you could direct your passion to get the real bad guys shut down: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZCODEC and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moviepass
I think we should edit this article to be more technically oriented towards the Vodei container format and not the software used to decode it. I'm going to see if I can find some files to analyse. MovieMan 22:38, 11 March 2007 (EDT)
I definitely think this should be expanded. With as little information as we have, this appears to be the most information gathered in one place on the subject.Qabala 23:54, 11 March 2007 (EDT)
:We should stick to information from accurate technical analysis - not comments on forums. There is far too much contradictory information on the forums and we don't know who posted it. Maybe it is a clueless computer newbie? Maybe it's a competitor? Maybe it's a shill? Maybe it's someone just making stuff up to increase their post count? Maybe it's a pirate? - how do you feel about that? MovieMan 00:58, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
::Ideally you're right, however, there are no official sources on this subject. The website gives almost no information. The screenshots are from my own computer. I've asked a few reputable software reviewers to take this software on. No one will review it or do an article based on it because they don't review adware or codecs. I'm going to continue adding information, but if you would be so kind as to ask for references where I miss them, I will find the best sources I can, or rephrase the articla.Qabala 10:59, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
This is not Wikipedia, we should aim to investigate and test the information we find, not just reference it. I'm in the process of analysing the format/software (I have done R&D for IBM related to multimedia in the past) and I'll update the article once I can prove, or disprove, the user reports. The theories are not confirmed either as they are purely speculation, but I have attempted to state them as such.Qabala 20:42, 13 March 2007 (EDT)

I think we should edit this article to be more technically oriented towards the Vodei container format and not the software used to decode it. I'm going to see if I can find some files to analyse. MovieMan 22:38, 11 March 2007 (EDT)
:We should stick to information from accurate technical analysis - not comments on forums. There is far too much contradictory information on the forums and we don't know who posted it.

MovieMan: complaints by "some users" don't matter when many many more users report it does not connect to the Internet and that's what my tests show as well

The user then downloads the software and installs it. After an undisclosed amount of use, the user will notice a nag screen (pictured right) directing them to register the software. Upon typing in the users machine number in the registration page, the site directs the user to another page asking for payments information (also pictured right).

The FAQ appears to indicate that the software is financed thru license fees charged to publishers but it has also been suggested, on Internet forums, that Vodei MP is sold using the shareware model.

The conclusion is that if Vodei MP exhibits any unexpected behavior (none of which appeared during this test), it is due to an unintentional conflict with other software or a bug; this should of course be reported to the distributor.

Folks, there are other ways to view movies with vodei encoding. There is no reason to pay for this software.Qabala 11:53, 10 March 2007 (EST)

:::I know there is a lack of sources for this format. I think the forums are a great way for us know what to investigate but I believe the criteria for inclusion in this article should be whether we can reproduce it. This is not Wikipedia, we should aim to investigate and test the information we find, not just reference it. I'm in the process of analysing the format/software (I have done R&D for IBM related to multimedia in the past) and I'll update the article once I can prove, or disprove, the user reports. :::::Most of the stuff in the article can be reproduced with some direction. The only things I can think of that I can't confirm are: The contents of a vodei encoded file, and how it's encoded. The theories are not confirmed either as they are purely speculation, but I have attempted to state them as such.Qabala 20:42, 13 March 2007 (EDT)

According to the Vodei MP website, the Vodei encoder makes it possible to store higher quality movies in smaller files. The method used to achieve this is not disclosed on the official website. When the files are examined in a Hex editor, it is revealed that the actual file is larger than it would be had it not been encoded. There has yet to be a satifactory explanation for how this format can speed up a download and facilitate higher quality video.

Furthermore, while Vodei Multimedia Processor is advertised as a free download, the Vodei encoder is not publicly available and its target audience is not revealed by the Vodei MP creator, which is a source of heated debates and articles questioning the real purpose of the software, its business model, and describing how to transform files produced by the Vodei encoder back to standard file containers or investigating the origin of S.V.R. Consulting Ltd., the alleged Vodei MP creator .

More controversy has arisen regarding the software's claim to be "completely free". The software displays a nag screen after an undisclosed amount of use (pictured right). This is to entice the viewer to purchase the software and redirects the user to a registration page . Typing in any 32 letters and/or digits will bring you to another screen asking for payment information (pictured right).

Still more controversy has arisen around the fact that all encoded files tend to be illegal copies of adult and mainstream movies. To date, there appear to be no known instances of perfectly legal movies circulating around the internet using the encoding. There have been unsubstantiated accusations that the software is an attempt to track illegal pirating.

There have been accusations that the software is spyware or adware. The FAQ on the softwares website claims the software does not connect to the internet, however, many users have reported that the processor stops functioning when a connection to the internet is severed.

Another possibility is that the software is meant to facilitate media pirating, yet enable the potential for profitability (by distributing pirated content freely, but getting money from people who want to play the encrypted files by charging for the decoder — an idea strengthened by the use of the Vodei encoder to encrypt movies on the pirate movie site http://moviesempire.com/ ). Yet another, more benign, theory is that the software is a beta model of an encryption technique that can allow media to be shared openly, yet still allow the original authors to receive payment for their work.

An individual identified as "VodeiMark" frequented at least one webboard between 2005 and 2006 in an attempt to dispel the mistrust of users.
Vodei is proprietery multimedia container based on the AVI format. A product known as Vodei Multimedia Processor, which is avilable for Microsoft Windows from http://www.vodei.com, is the only known way of displaying or converting Vodei files. These files consist of three parts: a standard compliant AVI video which is displayed when Vodei MP is not installed, a specially encoded/encrypted/formated video which plays when the appropriate software is installed, and a small amount of non visual data.

Vodei is proprietery multimedia container based on the AVI format. A product known as Vodei Multimedia Processor, which is avilable for Microsoft Windows from http://www.vodei.com, is the only known way of displaying or converting Vodei files. The AVI portion of the file usually contains a short advertisement for vodei.com encoded with Microsoft RLE. Vodei Multimedia Processor is the software which will decode the additional segment. This can be confirmed, and perhaps bypassed, through the use of a simple hex editor program.
Upon playback without the processor, the player will only show a short advertisement for the software (pictured right). After downloading and installing the software the file should play fine.

Vodei MP is available for Microsoft Windows. After installation, playback of Vodei encoder created files works in media players such as Windows Media Player. Vodei MP is not a codec, and after extracting the additional data from the end of the AVI file, simply passes it to the standard Video for Windows interface for decoding (verifiable through a hex editor). An MPEG-4 decoder such as ffdshow is required for the actual video decoding.
According to the Vodei MP website, the Vodei encoder makes it possible to store higher quality movies in smaller files. The method used to achieve this is not disclosed on the official website.

There have been accusations that the software is spyware or adware but there is no evidence to support this claim.

MovieMan: company name, improve english

HNM 1, developed and used by Cryo Interactive, is a second generation FMV format. It operates in fixed 320x200x256 resolution.

All numbers are litte endian.

File Structure
File consist of series of chunks, where all single frame related chunks (e.g.
it's video and audio portion) enclosed in a "superchunks".

Each file begins with a header chunk, carrying palette and superchunk offsets
table:
word header_size - size of this header chunk
byte palette - palette block
byte padding[] - zero or more 0xFF bytes of padding
dword offsets[] - 32-bit offsets of each superchunk, to the end of header chunk.
All offsets are relative to the first superchunk.
Last table entry points to the end of file.

* It is not neccessary to use offsets table to (quickly) navigate through the file. All superchunks comes without gaps inbetween.

Header chunk followed by one or more frame superchunks. Superchunk format:
word superchunk_size - size of the whole superchunk
byte chunk1[]
... - zero or more typed chunks
byte chunkN[]
byte videoframe - video chunk to the end of superchunk
As soon as videoframe chunk encountered and processed, decoder should continue to the next superchunk.

Typed chunk format:
word chunk_tag - TwoCC chunk id
word chunk_size - size of the chunk
byte data[chunk_size-4] - chunk data of (chunk_size-4) bytes total

Palette Block
Palette block contains one or more palette ranges to update.
byte start - index of the first entry to update
byte count - number of entries to update (0 means 256)
byte rgb[count*3] - RGB triplets of the new palette

Start and count both set to 0xFF indicates end of the palette block. Otherwise, change specified colors and process to the next range update block.

Typed chunks
pl Chunk
New palette block. See description above.

sd Chunk
Sound data. Contains complete VOC file splitted over several blocks.

pt Chunk
Game related, ignore.

kl Chunk
Collision map? Game related, ignore.

Video Chunk
Unlike typed chunks, video chunk has no standard chunk header, thus, it's the last chunk of superblock. It has at least following 4-byte header in bits:
0..8 width - width of the frame
9 flag1 - supposedly, indicates video data presence
10 flag2 - supposedly, indicates that the frame is not overlayed
12..14 unused - you can use these (zero) bits to distinguish this chunk from typed ones
15 flag3 - rarely seen set on some frames, purpose not yet known
16..23 height - height of the frame
24..31 mode - frame rendering mode
* Each new frame may update only partial area of actual 320x200 viewport.
* Zero frame width/height indicates that video is not changed from the previous frame, thus, no any video data follows this header.
* Mode 0xFE renders whole unpacked frame over previous frame.
* Mode 0xFF overlays unpacked frame with previous frame, it's pixels with color index 0 indicates transparency.

Video Decompression
If video height is non-zero, frame chunks continues with actual compressed frame data. It may be either legacy LZ-compressed raster or RLE-encoded overlay frame.

First, calculate sum of the first 6 bytes of the frame data. Depending on the calculated value, choose apropriate method.

Video Block 171
A keyframe. Unpack whole block using following algorithm (same algorithm used to decode some other game's resources as well).

First, reinterpret 6-byte header (the one you've calculated checksum of before) as follows:
word unpacked_len - size of the unpacked data
byte zero - should be zero
word packed_len - size of the packed data, including this header
byte salt - adjust checksum to 171 (0xAB)

Next, perform actual decompression:
Initialize bit-reader with 16-bits internal queue. When you need to take next bit from queue but it's already fully depleted, refill it with next 16-bits value from the stream. Straw queue bits from lowest to highest.
repeat
get next bit of the queue
if bit is non-zero
copy next byte of the input to the output
else
get next bit of the queue
if bit is non-zero
count = next 3 bits of the input
offset = next 13 bits of the input minus 8192
if count is zero
count = next 8 bits of the input
if count is zero
finish the unpacking
else
count = next bit of the queue * 2 + next bit of the queue
offset = next 8 bits of the input minus 256
copy count bytes at (output + offset) to the output

Video Block 172
Looks like it's not used anywhere. TBD.

Video Block 173
This is an overlay block. Reinterpret block header as:
word frame_size - size of the final unpacked frame (in bytes)
word codebook_size - size of the unpacked frame codebook
byte flags - bit 2 : use zero x/y coordinates
bit 6 : use color base 128, 0 otherwise
bit 7 : compression method (long runs)
byte salt - fixes up header's checksum to be 173 (0xAD)
If flags bit 2 is zero, read extra block's x and y coordinates, 16 bits each. Otherwise, assume them both set to zero.

Following decompression routines use slightly modified bit-reader. Unlike 171 decompression, now it takes bits starting from the highest one. Other rules remains the same.

After processing the header, unpack LZ-compressed codebook as follows:
repeat while codebook_size of output not generated
tag = next byte of the input
if bit 7 of tag is set
if length_code not yet encountered or already depleted
length_code = next 8 byte of the input
temp = top nibble of the length_code
else
temp = low nibble of the length_code
assume length_code depleted
offset = 7 bits of tag merged with lowest bit of temp
count = top 3 bits of temp plus 2
copy count bytes at (output - offset - 1) to the output
else
if tag is non-zero
tag = tag + color base (see flags bit 6)
output tag
* Many movies from the game "Dune" do not have their own palettes and thereby reuse the current in-game palette.
* For some unknown reasons AABBBBB.HNM file from Dune decodes incorrectly.
