DVD is an optical disc used to store digital data. DVD was originally an acronym but an official definition was never settled upon (unlike its precursor, CD = [[Compact Disc]]). However, "Digital Video Disc" and "Digital Versatile Disc" have both endured as meanings.

Standard DVDs use these technologies:
* [[MPEG]]: transport, video, and audio codecs
* [[VOBsub]]: subtitle format
* [[Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP)]]: used on DVD-audio discs
* [[DVD Content Scrambling System]]: used for region and navigation restriction on DVD video discs
* [[DVD Content Protection for Pre-recorded Media]]: used for encrypting DVD audio discs
